For overseas buyers, especially in the automotive parts industry, knowing when and how to get involved in a factory’s workflow is just as important as choosing the right supplier. I’ve seen too many projects go sideways not because the factory lacked skills, but because the buyer stayed hands-off until it was too late.

Overseas buyers should actively participate at each key stage of tooling and sheet metal production—starting from DFM analysis, through mold trials, to final packaging—to reduce delays, improve quality, and ensure the final product fits their market.

Let me walk you through the stages I’ve seen in over a hundred projects, and explain where your voice as a buyer makes the biggest difference.

What happens during DFM and technical confirmation?

Many buyers send drawings and then disappear. That’s a mistake. This first stage sets the tone for the entire project. If anything is unclear, mismatched, or over-engineered, it creates delays down the road.

In the DFM (Design for Manufacturability) phase, buyers should confirm drawings, tolerances, material specs, and product use scenarios with the factory to avoid costly tooling revisions later.

Tooling is the heart of metal part manufacturing. Once a mold is made, changing it takes time and money. Buyers who stay engaged during this phase often avoid surprises later.

Buyers should monitor tool build progress and be involved in T0 and T1 trial reviews to confirm part quality, fitment, and surface before moving to final approval.

Once the mold is approved, production begins—but that doesn’t mean you should disappear. The production phase is where buyers can still influence QA protocols, production speed, and final checks.

Buyers should agree on QA checkpoints, sampling methods, and packing standards during production to ensure ongoing consistency and avoid last-minute problems.
