China possesses one of the world’s most complete and massive industrial systems, especially for automotive parts. Vietnam’s supply chain is much smaller, less developed, and focuses mainly on assembly, importing about 80% of its parts, often from China.

Where Can You Find Better Cost Advantages: China or Vietnam?

Understanding the true cost is vital for business. Hidden expenses or unexpected price hikes can quickly erode your profit margins if you don’t compare carefully beyond just the labor rate.

Vietnam offers significantly lower labor costs (around $2.99/hour vs. China’s $6.50/hour) and generally cheaper land. However, China’s massive scale, efficiency, and better access to raw materials can offset its higher wages, especially for complex products.

Cost is always a major factor, and this is where Vietnam often gets attention. Their average factory wage3 is roughly $2.99 per hour, which is less than half of China’s average of $6.50 per hour. I know from running operations here that our labor costs in places like Huizhou are higher, maybe around 3800-4000 RMB per month. Land costs in Vietnam can also be lower; an example given was about $200 per square meter for a 50-year lease in Binh Duong province.

However, it’s not just about wages and land. We find that China’s highly developed infrastructure, advanced manufacturing technology4 (like Industry 4.0 adoption), and huge economies of scale help us manage overall costs effectively, particularly for the precision molds and quality aftermarket parts we produce at Alsette. Sometimes, raw material costs can actually be higher in Vietnam (reports suggest 3-10% more) because they need to import more. So, while Vietnam wins on pure labor cost, China can still be very competitive due to efficiency, scale, and a more complete local supply base, reducing logistical and material sourcing costs5.

Which Country Offers Better Trade Deals and Market Access?

Navigating international trade rules is complicated. Choosing a base without good trade agreements could mean facing high tariffs that make your products uncompetitive in key markets like the US or EU.

Vietnam has a distinct advantage with 16 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), including major ones like CPTPP and EVFTA, giving preferential access to over 60 markets. China relies more heavily on RCEP and has fewer FTAs with Western markets.

This is an area where Vietnam currently shines. They’ve been very active in signing trade deals. Having 16 FTAs, including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)6 and deals with the EU (EVFTA) and the UK, means Vietnamese exports often face lower or zero tariffs in many major global markets. For example, exporting a TV from Vietnam to the US might face a 3.9% tariff, while the same TV from China could face an 11.4% tariff. This difference can be huge for profitability.

China is part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)7, which is significant for trade within Asia-Pacific and aims for 90% tariff elimination among members over time. However, compared to Vietnam, China has fewer agreements offering preferential access to high-value markets in Europe and North America. Vietnam, while improving, faces more infrastructure challenges. Their highway network is less extensive, major projects like the Ho Chi Minh City metro have faced delays, and ports can experience congestion. Power supply can also be a bottleneck in some areas, potentially impacting manufacturing operations. These factors can add time and uncertainty to logistics within Vietnam and for export, making it potentially less efficient for complex, time-sensitive supply chains compared to China’s highly optimized system. What About Technology, Skills, and Supply Chain Dependency?

You need access to the right technology and skilled people. Relying too much on one source for critical parts or expertise creates risk if that source faces disruption or can’t innovate.

China has a strong advantage in automotive R&D, a large pool of engineers, and mastery over core technologies. Vietnam’s tech base is weaker, lacking major R&D centers and skilled engineers, making it highly dependent on China for components (80% of auto parts) and technology.
